2011 Fish Diary
2011 COSTA RICA TRIP
Ok, so we started this year off the same way as last year & went back to the SILVER KING LODGE in Costa Rica. If you want to give Tarpon fishing a whirl in a perfect jungle lodge, check out www.silverking.com
PHENOMENAL!!!!
APRIL
Then, we come back to New England (and the COLD) and start venturing out on warm days for ground fish.
One day we were incredibly fortunate to see not ONE, not TWO but THREE Atlantic Right Whales. The first was alone & on our ride back in from Stellwagen Bank, we came upon a Cow and calf!! The calf kept lifting it's head and tail clear out of the water at the same time. An incredible sight!!
MAY
RAIN...RAIN...RAIN...RAIN...RAIN Unbelievable!
Managed very few trips out this month...schoolie stripers are in the river. Not real strong, but they are on the way.
Managed a few nice haddock & cusk.
(mmmmmm...cusk)
JUNE
OK, now we're cooking!
Gloucester Harbor is loading up with bait...ALOT of Mackerel. Should bring the bigger stripers and Tuna around. Managed to find a few small stripers and we saw Blue Fin Tuna crashing on Stellwagen 6/4. Only a matter of time now!
Coming back in on the 5th, we came across a large pod of Atlantic White Sided Dolphin...always a treat to run with them. Sometimes Tuna will tag along below feeding Dolphin, so we set out a squid rig and a Deep Diver hoping for the best. Suddenly we had three (very large) Fin Whales along side us as well. AWESOME SIGHT: DOLPHIN & WHALES RUNNING ALONG THE SIDE OF YOUR BOAT!!
Safety made us back down and let the "party" of mammals get a good distance ahead of us. I just love seeing the incredible sights on the water!
JULY & AUGUST
This summer has been VERY slow for Striped Bass. Managed to gather a few along the shoreline but saw nothing of any real size this year. Blue Fin Tuna have been hit or miss. Jamie hooked into a good sized Tuna but lost it after an hour and a half.
Ground fishing has been good all year. We always come back with a little something for dinner...or ALOT of somethings to give to friends.
Either way, it's great to be out on the water in New England!
SEPTEMBER
Here comes September...here comes the wind.
When we are able to get out, the ground fishing is awesome. I have never been one who likes to anchor up...feels too restricted tied up to an anchor. But, when the wind is blowing you have to do whatever it takes to land a few fish.
We have been taking advantage of the calmer side of the island. Thachers rewards us with all kinds of funky finds on the bottom. Stripers are around as are Bluefish, but they are few and far between.
Maybe October will bring something good...
OCTOBER
So, here it is...
The season is winding down. Still blowing pretty good on most days, so we take advantage of every good day we get...even if it means taking a day or two off from work!!
We did come across a Humpback Whale that was on the surface "singing". Not like the noises they make on, say...the Discovery Channel. This whale was blowing through it's blowhole making a noise that sounded like a fog horn...or twisted bugle. Very Odd. The sound carried atleast 5 miles. I had never heard such a sound!
NOVEMBER
The weather has been SPECTACULAR in November!
(What is going on?)
We have been SLAYING the Cod out on Stellwagen and Tillies. Not so many Dogfish now...they must go somewhere for the winter, I'm not really sure.
Have been seeing a few more whales passing through. I sure do hope next year brings more whales. We were SO lucky to see the Atlantic Right whales earlier this year. What a great treat!
Took REEL EZ out for the last time on November 26th. The boat will be wrapped up this coming Saturday Dec. 10th. Our last trip out was exceptional! Just the two of us landed over 75 Cod! Tossed all but two back in.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!
Booked our next fishing trip: in March we will be heading for Crocodile Bay in Costa Rica. It will be our fourth trip to the country but our first to Crocodile Bay. Can hardly wait!!
Have a GREAT winter and dream of tight lines...
