Whale Watches
Four Hours/Eight Hours
Just outside Gloucester, maybe 13 miles out, is a place called Stellwagen Bank. Late Summer and through the Fall, the great Humpback Whales come to feed on the bountiful bait in the area. It's a spectacular sight to watch a Humpback "Breach", that is: they dive deep into the water, then throw their bodies straight up into the air. Biologists believe it's a form of communucation, like tail slapping or flipper slapping. I think they do it for sheer JOY myself! You could also see, Fin Whales, Minke Whales, Atlantic White Sided Dolphin, Harbor Seals, Basking Sharks, Right Whales and Pilot Whales. Occasionaly, You may see an Ocean Sunfish or "Mola-Mola"...the GOOFIEST thing you will ever see!
Cruises
Four Hours/Eight Hours
Ok, so deeper water makes you edgy...the smell of fish isn't your "cup of tea". Well, how about a nice cruise around Cape Ann. The Lighthouses take on a whole new perspective when viewed from the water. Thatcher's Island is the home of Twin Lights, Eastern Point boasts it's own lighthouse at the beginning of the Dogbar Breakwater. The Straightsmouth Lighthouse in Rockport is very pretty from the water. If you're up to a boat ride, The Isle of Shoals is about a half hour cruise off the coast of Portsmouth, NH. Maybe a tour of the Annisquam River and Gloucester Harbor would be cool. The back of Hammond Castle and the Beuport Museum in East Gloucester are picturesque.
All in All, no matter what you choose, the idea it that you have a great, fun, relaxing time.
